President's Message

December 4, 2003

These are the rulings given to me from Mr. Denarvise Thornton in regards to the Mercy Rules situations that we discussed at our last meeting of December the 3rd

Jay Petty had a question do we stop the clock and inform the coaches that the 35 point difference has been reached  and notify the timer that the clock shall run at all times except during a time out, technical fouls or injury.  Mr. Thornton felt that this is not necessary.  Since this is the first year that Florida has adopted the Mercy Rule you might mention this in you coaches conference and also the Referee should mention the proper procedures to the timer when  going over their duties before the game starts.

He also said that the trail official or the one nearest the table should be able to convey this to the timer after the point difference has been reached, in situations when  the timer was unaware.   Now that we have a ruling, please follow these procedures to prevent any future confusion.

Also:

Jerry Williams and Mckennis Allen  along with  the rest of us, did not agree when the clock should start while under the Mercy Rule after a timeout when a free throw was to be administered.  Mr. Thornton explained that we should administer this free throw the same as we would any other free throw.  The Mercy Rule has not at this point changed anything, he said that at a later date in the season if he sees that things would warrant some change he would address this at that time, but for now, please do as we always have.   Also, he would like for us to continue to use our signals and proper mechanics, even though the clock has not stopped and is running.

Hope this clears things up, any questions please give me a call.  Remember we are discussing the Mercy Rule, so Please have a little mercy on me.

We also discussed at this meeting ordering new SABO jackets, or if you have already bought a new jacket and it has on old patch or the new FHSAA patch or another association patch and you would like it covered up with a new patch. We are trying to just get a patch with the same logo that will be on the new jackets so you will not have to buy another jacket you can have the patch sewn over the old one.  We also discussed warm-up suits with the SABO logo on them.   Several of  the larger association in the state are doing this now, and I think it would really look sharp for us to try something like this.  We would wear them to and from the games.  I have a list of members who are interested in  new jackets,  patch and warm-up suits.  We do not have  an exact price because we need to know the number of people who are interested in each item.   If  I were to give you a ballpark figure it would be around  $55.00 for jacket with patch ,  $5.00 to $10.00 for patch only, and around $60.00 for warm-up suit.

I need to know if anyone who has not signed up from last nights meeting would be interested, I need your name and size.   Larger sizes are a few dollars more so expect that.  The cut off date is by our next meeting on December the 17th.   At that time I will  take a count and  proceed with getting the correct prices and start collecting money.  We will  not order any jackets, patches or warm-up suits without them being paid in full up front.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Happy and Safe Holiday Season.   This year has flown by as your President and I have enjoyed myself.  We are at the beginning of a New Year, this is the best time to step back and take a look at where we have been and where we are going.

As officials, it is time to try and change bad habits and get ourselves on track for the upcoming Districts and State playoff games.  The Evaluation Committee will be out and about over this Holiday Season at the tournaments. Please make a point to yourself and your crew to officiate every game as if it were the State Finals.

For those at the December 17th  meeting, it was nice to actually have some time to get to know and socialize with each other during the meeting.  The special guest was a pleasure and I think he was having as much fun as we were.   Once again those who did not attend you missed a good one.

Our next meeting is January 7, 2004.

We hope to see everyone there, enjoy your  holidays and be safe.

Happy Holidays

Margaret Busbee, SABO President
